This new edition contains a collection of definitions and brief case studies on topics that today’s citizen designers must consider, including new essays on social innovation, individual advocacy, group strategies, and living as an ethical designer. TOTAL CONTROL
by Andrew Fairclough

Andrew Fairclough is a Los Angeles based Australian Illustrator, Designer and Art Director. After a misspent youth completing a Business Degree, Andrew moved on to designing skate and snowboard graphics in between bouts of self-instruction and full time work in a design agency.

Andrew’s work is inspired by mid-century spot illustrations and design as well as vintage sci-fi, comics, surrealism, DIY art culture, and the textural wonders of degraded print. Often working with a restricted colour palette Andrew’s work seeks to hint at the nostalgia and tactility of found art, whilst also creating something completely new.

You should check out Welcome to My Life by Elizabeth Ito! It’s a Cartoon Network short that was just released and it has garnered quite a bit of totally deserved critical praise. It’s like a warm blanket you just wanna wrap yourself up in. I love it!

I love, love, LOVED the art style in this! And the documentary-esque format of the short! Very refreshing to see!

This is so genuine and innocent. It’s really adorable.

there’s a lot media that tries to achieve a kind of young, humble realism with the dialogue and mood, and most works tend to fall very clearly flat. (looking at you oxenfree)

this is not one of those! the interaction, inflection, conflicts, etc.. everything works to feel genuine and believable in this little short’s own context. i’ve become so accustomed to this angle not working for me because it’s rarely executed smoothly, but this thing was simply worth watching

Why the Rise of AI Makes Human Intelligence More Valuable Than Ever

In the popular TV show Sherlock, visual depictions of our hero’s deductive reasoning often look like machine algorithms. And probably not by accident, given that this version of Conan Doyle’s detective processes tremendous amounts of observed data—the sort of minutiae that the average person tends to pass over or forget—more like a computer than a human.

Sherlock’s intelligence is both strength and limitation. His way of thinking is often bounded by an inability to intuitively understand social and emotional contexts. The show’s central premise is that Sherlock Holmes needs his friend John Watson to help him synthesize empirical data into human truth.

In Sherlock we see the analog for modern AI: highly performant learning machines that can achieve metacognitive results with the assistance of fully cognitive human partners. Machine intelligence does not by its nature make human intelligence obsolete. Quite the opposite, really—machines need human guidance.

This reads so nicely.
